Eleventh Championships 2017 Review

Jersey was the host nation for the 11th Championships and the magnificent facilities of the Les Creux Bowls Club provided the perfect setting for the players to demonstrate their skills.

Bowls Jersey President Greg Davis extended a warm welcome to the 16 Nations that took part in the competition.  A particularly warm EBU welcome was extended to the teams from France and Hungary who were competing in their first ever European Championships.

Bad weather interrupted the first days play but a return to sunshine and a tremendous effort by the players ensured the schedule was back on track by Monday evening. By the end of play on Tuesday Scotland were in a very strong position topping both the Men’s and Overall Teams tables.

By end of play Wednesday Ireland had come to the fore, topping all tables bar the Mixed, were Wales held sway.

Thursday saw the emergence of Guernsey, they went on to take the Men’s title and were in real contention for the Overall Team title.

On the final days play on Friday the battle for the medals ensued, with England victorious in the Ladies Pairs, while Wales took the Mixed Fours medals.

The Gold medal winners for the Overall Team Championships were Irelands. Congratulations to the Irish team of Mark Wilson, Andrew Kyle, Megan Wilson and Catherine Beattie.
